Dialectical behavior therapy was originally designed to assist individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. It?s purpose is to increase life skills, through providing individual therapy and skills training. The skills training component of this therapy teaches emotional regulation skills, interpersonal skills, distress tolerance skills, and mindfulness skills. The purpose of each of these skills is to allow an individual to meet the expectations of living in the world today effectively. Individual therapy serves to reinforce these skills and help the individual learn to implement these skills in everyday life. Phone consultation provides the opportunity to coach the client to utilize the DBT skills in crisis situations.
